Starting autumn 2008 I solo rode a motorbike from Alaska to Argentina to raise money and awareness for Casa Alianza a Mexican and Central American Children's Charity.
Why Casa Alianza?
Originally I wanted to raise money for Chance UK a children's charity that I mentored for in 2005. I had quite a few people mention they would like to donate but not for a London children's charity so I heard about the work Casa Alianza was doing I decided to include them. After my trip was delayed for 1 year and 10 months I contacted Chance UK and they said they were already working with someone was going to walk the Arctic and the Sahara Desert. Who would have thought I would be out adventured!
I was incredibly impressed with the work that casa Alianza is doing. Particularly after I did a walking tour of Tegucigalpa seeing what life was like for the kids on the street. Living under bridges, shot by the police, pregnant and sniffing solvents.
Then when you see how well adjusted and thankful the kids in the centres are it is amazing. I helped a lovely 14 year old with her english homework who had a 2 year old. Some kids that age that have children have been raped, sometimes by people in their families.
Probably the most common asked question on my trip. I used to tell people it was because ...
1. I like alteration - Annette's Amazing Adventure from Alaska to Argentina
2. I wanted to eat real fruit and vegetables again - I think that produce in UK supermarkets is grown in chemicals and picked green
But really it was because I wanted to see Latin America
No, why by motorbike?
I wanted to prove to myself that I could do something that was totally outside my comfort zone. And if I could learn to ride a motorbike and travel the length of the Americas that anyone could do anything they set their mind too.
