World Cup Qualifier for Free

March 28th, 2009 by sunflowers

El Salvador played the USA in the world cup qualifier today and I got to see it from the hill outside the stadium. It was a good view as well as a band and hotdog stand just behind where I was standing. It was a very exciting game with El Salvador leading until the 42nd minute of the second half when the USA scored a goal to bring the game to a tie of 2 all.

New Tyres and Fixing Bike

San Salvador

San SalvadorSan SalvadorSan SalvadorMario and JC picked me up from the lakeside and we went to see a volcano and then took my bike to get new tyres and have the throttle fixed.

Carlos who allowed me to stay at the cottage also has a tyre and mechanic shop so I got the tyres at cost and they fixed the bike and checked the whole thing including the valves as I haven’t done the big 12,000 mile service. A huge thank you to Carlos as me riding on the roads is dangerous enough so it is nice to know my bike is safe.

Reading My Camera Manual

March 26th, 2009 by sunflowers

San Salvador

San SalvadorSan SalvadorToday I spent most of the day reading my camera manual which was good as my little camera is on it’s last legs from being dropped one too many times. One of the reasons I like the Canon is that can stitch photos together which I can now also do with my Panasonic.

I also went through my itinerary and according to my original schedule I should be in Bolivia by now. I also checked my footprint guide for Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia and it says that May to October is fine for those countries so I might pop over to Venezuela etc for a couple of months.

When I was riding down to the place I am staying I dropped my bike and dented my pannier and today I notice that I also scratched my visor and wreaked my throttle.

Revised Schedule

March 25th, 2009 by sunflowers

San SalvadorSan SalvadorAbout two years ago I invested and helped set up a men’s skin care company. Just before I left in November my business partner and principle shareholder decided that she wanted full ownership of the company. Due to the extended length of my trip I am going to let her buy me out. I also calculated out my tax bill and I think that from the excess that I put away for my taxes that I should have enough to extend the trip six or seven months. Which means I will be at the Hubb meet up Dec 2009 three years after I was originally going to be there (in 2006 I was going to travel from Argentina north to Alaska).

I met the girl in the picture while I was walking around the lake and bought her an ice cream on behalf of Sri who said that if he ever met an Israeli travelling by themselves he would buy them a drink.

Absolutely Nothing

March 24th, 2009 by sunflowers

Today I did absolutely nothing. I read three books, watched two movies and canoed for an hour.

I have done some videos. This is what a big part of my trip is, riding around looking at the scenery while listening to music.

Lago de Coatepeque

March 23rd, 2009 by sunflowers

When I was a the bmw breakfast Carlos one of the bikers kindly offered to let me stay at his lakeside cottage for me to stay in for a few days. I have always wanted to have friends that have waterside batches so I took him up on the offer as I also need to spend some time deciding on my itinerary, recalculating out my budget, writing up my blog and putting together a page with the costs for each country so far.

Crater Diving

March 22nd, 2009 by sunflowers

San SalvadorOn Sunday I went diving in a crater lake, Lago de Ilopango. The second half of the first dive we got to see the fissures in the lake bed where hot water was coming up through the rock and the area around the rocks looked like abandoned fireplaces.

It was well cool and I wish we could have spent more time there. I was hoping to see spherical rocks for our second dive but it was too windy and it ended up being a 20 minute dive as someone’s equipment was faulty and the other diver ran out of air. I did get to see one of the rocks when we got back to the dive shop.

I also took the opportunity to take photos along the road on the way back as it is a bit more difficult from a bike.

BMW Bikers

March 21st, 2009 by sunflowers

San SalvadorOne of the joys of motorcycling is doing a ride out with a bunch of other bikes. I was lucky enough to be invited along to the regular breakfast ride of the BMW bikers. We met at a service station at seven and Mario and I headed out first so that I could stop and take photos. The ride was mainly along a coast road that had lovely curves. Unfortunately once the rest of the riders caught up to me I didn’t have the opportunity to ride with them for very long before they all passed me.

San SalvadorThe coast road has a number of tunnels, one of them long enough that I regretted having my sunglasses on. We then met up for breakfast at a coffee finca (farm) along with the Christian Bikers where I got a lot of good tips for the rest of my trip.

After breakfast I had my own escort by some of the Santa Ana bikers to Juayúa where they have a food festival every weekend and Santa Ana.

A big thank you to the El Salvador BMW bike club for making me feel so welcome.

Mileage: 190
Miles to the gallon: 57.5

Suchitoto & Joya de Cerén

March 20th, 2009 by sunflowers

Mario’s beautiful partner Fernanda had a couple of school friends she was showing around so I tagged along for a couple of days and we saw Suchitoto a quaint town on a picturesque lake, a volcano and Joya de Cerén, a Mayan settlement found intact in the volcanic ash (most Mayan ruins are the royal palaces and temples). The bird the national bird of El Salvador.

VRC El Salvador

March 19th, 2009 by sunflowers

I wish I had realised how expensive it is to maintain a bike before I decided to do the trip. Actually the cost of the amount of work I needed to do to my F650 when I had it was one of the reasons why I needed to delay my trip. Today I went and had an oil change and hand guard protectors fitted as the handlebar end was wreaked along with my clutch. Luckily Boanerges who I met last night worked in a bike shop and arranged for me to receive a discount which was lovely of him.
