Painting the Flat

February 28th, 2007 by sunflowers

Painting the FlatA few years ago I decided that I was getting too old to still be in a flatshare and the normal hassles that go with it (other people’s mess) and bought a tiny (25 square metres) flat which I then ended up letting out rather than moving into mainly for economics reasons. The new tenant is moving in this weekend and she wanted the flat repainted and the carpet cleaned before moving in so tonight we spent the evening painting the flat. I didn’t think it would take too long as the flat is not very big but as usual with DIY I underestimated the amount of work it needed plus it needed to have some plaster work done first (the plaster reckons he is going to charge me for his parking ticket as he fed the metre) and the hot water also stopped due to a air bubbled so I had to get a plumber in (see what I mean by economics reasons – and that is before the bill for the roof replacement comes in when they finally get permission from the council which was applied for in October of last year). So it looks like I will have to go back after my motorbike maintenance class tomorrow night to finish it off.Painting the Flat

I really dislike it when people get into a mood and don’t tell you what is wrong and instead just make you feel bad. Like it isn’t hard enough to feel good about life without having to put up with someone else bringing you down. When I worked with homeless kids in Australia we had this rule that when you first arrived for a session you had to say how you were feeling on the thumb scale (up for good, down for bad and in between). It was nice as you knew when to leave people alone or if they treated you funny that it wasn’t anything to do with you.

I would really like to try and find someone to do my trip with but I really don’t want to put up with anyone who gets moody. When I get around to it I might post something on HU to see if anyone wants to go but insist on a trial weekend ride first. But then if you don’t get along, how do you tell them you don’t think it is right. An email saying that you don’t want to travel together as you think it would be better if you were just to be friends 😉

Partnership Problems

February 26th, 2007 by sunflowers

I wrote to my partner in Turkey about the restaurant saying until I was bought out that we need to agree on how the restaurant would be run and she finally wrote back yesterday. It looks like I am going to have to try and get legal advice as it seems we can’t agree on anything and I am not even sure where to start in understanding my legal position with a foreign investment. Most of the time the whole thought of it makes me feel ill.

On the plus side I finally signed up to the gym today so I can be in peak physical fitness when I go on my trip (I can hear my friends laughing in my head at that statement).

Riding in a Row

February 25th, 2007 by sunflowers

Pulled UpEssex HorsesOnly two observers showed up for our ride today (the fact that it was pissing down might have had something to do with that). As there was seven pupils we all rode in single file and weren’t allowed to over take each other which was nice as it gave me a chance to concentrate on following the system as we all rode in a line. I thought that I would be pretty confidence on the bends after yesterday’s practise but I still had problems near the end of the ride so I have decided to sign up to another track day so that I will learn at the first one, practise and then learn again. I think that I am going to concentrate this summer on improving my riding and finding new music to listen to by going to most of the festivals. ps. This is us on one of our stops talking through our ride and these are some horses that were watching us while we did it.

Time Optimisation

February 24th, 2007 by sunflowers

Thatched roof cottageI met up with a musician for a date to go riding the Essex bends as I really needed to do some training. We didn’t really say anything to each other before we started riding and after a while he made me go in front and I promptly lost him at a roundabout. At first I thought that he had just missed the exit and would be coming around again and see me just after the off road. But after ten minutes I began to worry it was just a ploy to leave and just as thought about heading home he rang to say he was at a petrol station.

After lunch I offered to pillion him as he is thinking about getting a F650 in order to do a three month trip this summer to North Africa and Central Europe. I also asked him to take a little video clip of the roads we were doing. After reassuring him I had a good sense of direction I managed to get us lost and we had to ask directions back to the pub where we had left his bike.

We were getting along so well that I invited him home to see Mondo Enduro and we had a pleasant dinner in the local Turkish restaurant. He was one of the nicest guys that I have ever met over the internet but at the end of the evening he said that he would rather just be friends and I think he genuinely meant be friends rather than ‘I never want to see you again’. Which is ok as it is harder for me to find cute guys to ride out with than another internet date.

ps. I have put a Watford band Mohair’s music to the clip of the ride. I know that I didn’t have a very good line for the first couple of bends but I was just getting used to having someone on the back. And these weren’t the coolest lanes we rode. Some of them were so muddy it was almost like doing offroad! The picture is of a thatched roof cottage. pps. the first one is wmv and will play faster but you have to click the play button twice and then second is avi but a bigger file.

Second Date

February 23rd, 2007 by sunflowers

I talked to my best friend in New Zealand this morning and she is engaged to the guy that she started going out with before xmas. The only problem is that he has a really bad temper and takes it out on her which is pretty upsetting to hear.

Tonight’s date was really interesting almost to the point where you wonder if there was any exaggeration as the stories were fantastic but he had go home early due to a late night the night before with a promise to meet up for a comedy show one night – mm, yah right.

All the sites that I joined before Valentines day have come to fruition this week and tonight was the first of three blind (as in never met them) dates. We went to see the musical Evita as I really liked the movie and the soundtrack. Seeing as how the guy had been particularly congenial over email I asked him if he would do a critique of the date afterwards. It turns out that I don’t need an evaluation as I already know the results. Whenever I meet anyone that I like I end up jeopardising the whole thing by saying absolutely daft things. Within the first half an hour I was trying to be funny and instead managed to be slightly insulting and idiotic. It is a good thing that most of the evening was taken up watching the musical (very enjoyable). Needless to say other than an email about a book we had discussed I haven’t heard from him. But my friend says it is a really good book and has lent it to me.

ELAM Membership Renewal

February 21st, 2007 by sunflowers

I have added passing my advanced riding test to my revamped new year’s resolutions as it turns out that my membership to ELAM is £35 instead of £15 because I haven’t passed my test yet. So now I have an economic reason to pass the exam.

When you are tired of London you are tired of life

February 20th, 2007 by sunflowers

I have been thinking quite a bit about my feelings of restlessness. And even though I do miss the travelling from my old job, seeing new places was becoming a bit passé in the end. If you want a wide range of experiences then London really should be the place to do it so I have been trying to think of what I can do to make the most of living in such a diverse city but for the last few days I couldn’t think of anything other than the obvious hedonistic lifestyle which I would rather not get into. I finally realised today that one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had was mentoring Rebecca. I had been tossing up whether to do another year mentoring but thought I would have so much to do with the preparation that I wouldn’t have time. One of the other mentors told me about another children’s charity which is slightly less time consuming so I have filled in one of their applications NCH.

Gorgeous Networks

February 19th, 2007 by sunflowers

On Valentines Day one of the free evening tabloids had an article about a dating site called gorgeous networks where the current members vote on whether you can join and then it is two hundred and fifty pounds to join. So I signed up and was voted in but have decided not to join. But they do have this dream dates thing you can join separately where you just meet up for various dates which I might do as one of things I dislike about internet dating is all the emailing you do that fizzles into nothing or the fact that when no matter how well you get along over email you really have to meet them to know. Maybe I should put my date request as motor biking the Americas 😉
