Better at Bends

January 28th, 2007 by sunflowers

Butternut Squash SoupI had my second advanced riding class today. I felt like they ganged up on me as I had two observers which I was a bit nervous about as we were doing the ‘bends’ which is traditionally my weak area – I almost failed my DAS due to my bends.

Apparently I have progressed and I am technically correct but not fast enough still I was pretty chuffed.

When I got home I then did my first cooking of the year (sadly missing my goal of 50% of my food) and made up a huge batch of butternut squash soup.

Gherkin and Spa Pool

January 27th, 2007 by sunflowers

GherkinFolding BikeSaturday my flatmate Azra and I went cycling through the city and I showed her the base of the Gherkin which I discovered earlier in the week. Azra has just bought a folding cycle whose wheel size is closer to my roller blades than my bicycle as you cans see from the picture of our bikes locked up. Watching her struggle to keep up had me cracking up most of the way home, poor thing, I think she is going to buy a proper bike. We also took advantage of my old gyms open days to spend a couple of hours using the spa pool, steam room, sauna and the hydrotherapy beds. Cannons Spa PoolHydrotherapy Bed

No Bowling in Romford

January 25th, 2007 by sunflowers

Snow in LondonSnow in LondonOn Thursday evening I was going to join the bowling my bike club had arranged in Romford but as my friend pulled out at the last moment I decided that it was too much to bike at night in the winter conditions by myself. I did ride my bike to work and it was snowing in the morning which was cool as there wasn’t any on the ground.

Suddenly Snow

January 24th, 2007 by sunflowers

Snow in LondonSnow in LondonSnow in LondonWednesday morning London woke up to a coating of snow. We haven’t seen so much since 2003. I had a lovely time walking to work taking photos as I went. I must admit that my new walk to work, though less than half the time it takes to walk to Hammersmith is not as nice as there are no parks to walk through. But even the dreary roads through Hackney looked pretty under a blanket of snow. One of the pictures is my bike under the snow.

Copious Chores

January 23rd, 2007 by sunflowers

At the moment life seems to be a never ending list of things I need to sort out. Including hanging a new curtain rail that arrived bent but the company that supplied it were ever so nice at sorting it out and rushing me a new one www.byretech.com. Now I just have to figure out how to cut it down and attach it to the ceiling.

Canada Square Skate Rink

January 22nd, 2007 by sunflowers

Canada Square Skate RinkOn Monday I attended a Network Canada evening. I have been on their email list for several years but have never managed to make it to one of their events. But seeing as how it was skating at Canada Square I decided it would be nice to try another London outdoor skating rink.

The rink was lovely and the view was very different from the eighteenth century beauty of Somerset House and instead it was surrounded by the recent sky scraper developments in Canary Wharf.

No Internet Again

January 20th, 2007 by sunflowers

We lost our internet connection again. One of the pubs nearby has free wireless access but unfortunately the signal wasn’t strong enough for my laptop. I guess this is what it is going to be like when travelling. Intermittent internet access. Still I am not paying Orange each month to learn that.

Finally the figures on Friday

January 19th, 2007 by sunflowers

I finally received the list of costs and income from the restaurant in Turkey. It appears that our costs were £19300 more than our revenue and my business partner is expecting me to send half of that to her. Very annoying considering I was supposed to receive regular accounts and didn’t get the costs until now. I went out there in August to do the books and told her that we were spending well over the amount we were earning and needed to cut costs, after which she hired four more people when we already had too many staff. And the one thing I asked her to do was put a menu and the opening hours in the window as we don’t keep the tables set and from the outside it was hard to tell it was a restaurant and she wouldn’t do it.

Resolving this is going to be fun.

Ice Staking at Somerset House

January 18th, 2007 by sunflowers

Ice Skating at Somerset House
Today my new company had it’s quarterly review meeting after which we went to Somerset House for ice skating and then to Planet Hollywood for dinner. We were all a bit worried about the skating as London has been having gale force winds apparently the roof blew off London Bridge station. Never fear, we had lovely conditions and my ability to rollerblade paid off in ice skating.

After Planet Hollywood one of the traders convinced a bunch of us to go to Tiger Tiger which is a notorious meat market. I did get hit on by quite a few sleazy guys but after ignoring them managed to get a good nights dancing in.

Motorcycle MOT

January 17th, 2007 by sunflowers

I took my bike for it’s MOT today. I was well impressed with Burwin Motorcycles on Essex Road. I had ordered a second-hand kill switch unit from Motoworks and the headlight switch on it didn’t work so Burwin took the switch from it and soldered it onto my current unit. It also needed a new back tyre (apparently it shouldn’t have gotten it’s original MOT as the front tyre was a street tyre and the rear was knobbly) and new rear brake pads. I have been worried about the back breaks but it turns out that when I did the front brake pads I overfilled the break fluid and now my back breaks are sweet. All up it came to £133 which includes the tyre.

ps. Funny statistic in the metro yesterday that on a random sample of a bunch of notes in circulation in the UK all were found to have traces of cocaine, which doesn’t actually surprise me.
